Porcelain veneers are thin shells that we place over your teeth to conceal and repair a number of aesthetic flaws. Thanks to advances in dental technology and techniques, this procedure is now more available and affordable than ever before, making it possible for people from all walks of life to have a beautiful smile.
Are Veneers Right for Me?
The best way to find out if porcelain veneers are the right choice for transforming your smile is to call our Tustin, CA dental office and schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Reber. He’ll perform an examination to confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy and discuss your goals with you to make sure that they are in line with what veneers can accomplish.
Some of the flaws we can fix with veneers include:
- Teeth that are discolored or stained in such a way that they are bleach resistant
- Teeth that are too short (or eroded)
- Widely spaced teeth
- Teeth with damage to the enamel
- Chipped teeth
Veneers are not appropriate if you have gum disease or active areas of decay; however, once these conditions are treated, you may become a good candidate.
Veneers can be placed using two different methods. One method requires that a thin layer of enamel be removed from your teeth to allow the veneers to fit properly and create a permanent bond on the teeth. Unlike other parts of your body, tooth enamel does not regrow or restore itself, so once the enamel is removed, the procedure is not reversible and you will need to wear veneers permanently.
Another type of veneers (sometimes called “prepless veneers”) does not require that enamel be removed. We will discuss both of these options with you and help you determine which type of veneers will best help you meet your goals.
Caring for Porcelain Veneers
Veneers can give you a stunning smile that still looks completely natural. Because the veneers are somewhat translucent, your natural tooth structure shows through, which allows your teeth to reflect light in the same way that a natural tooth surface does. This means that nobody will ever need to know the secret to your sparkling smile!
Veneers are designed to be durable and stain resistant. We do recommend that you refrain from chewing items that are not food, including ice, pencils or pens, and your fingernails, since this can cause veneers to detach from your teeth. Enjoy all the foods you enjoy, but be sure to brush afterward so the veneers can retain their beautiful finish for a longer time.
If you smoke, we strongly recommend that you quit prior to having veneers placed on your teeth. Smoking is a leading risk factor for developing gum disease and oral cancer, and the habit will also quickly discolor your veneers, which can’t be whitened in the same way that natural teeth can. If you need assistance with this, please talk to us. We’d be happy to provide advice and support.
